The Warden was a Male Cousland Warrior who bravely gave his life to destroy the Archdemon after putting Anora on the throne. He worked in favor of fairness and good in the world, so he freed the werewolves from their curse, sided with the mages when the Tower was overrun and backed Bhelen to the throne. He decided to destroy the Anvil in the deep roads and brought back mages from the Tower to rescue Conner without sacrificing Isolde. Upon meeting Avernus at the Warden's Keep, he did not denounce the man's work, but instead punished him for the methods he used in his research. Avernus was executed for his crimes, but his research was collected and saved. Cousland was a good friend of Alistair, who still speaks fondly of his old friend although many years have gone by since his sacrifice.
In light of the reduced numbers in Fereldan, a more experienced Grey Warden was sent from Orlais to be the Commander of the Grey. With the skills of many years spent with the royal court, she put down the minor rebellion. With the skills as a warrior, she defeated the Architect and Mother. She gave back to the people, opting to spread her forces to protect all the land, as well as putting a great deal of her personal money into upgrading the Keep. On the day of the battle, she defended the city of Amaranthine. Because of her success in Kal’hirol, the Dwarves were able to retake the city. Overall, she left the Arling in better condition than when she arrived. And she did leave. About five years after arriving, she was ordered up to Weisshaupt fortress. Upon departing, she named Alistair the Warden-Commander of Fereldan.
Hawke, the Champion, was a man that first appeared in the year 9:30. Hailing from the devastated town of Lothering, he and his family took up residence in Kirkwall, in the Free Marches. In the Qunari conflict Hawke convinced his companion Isabella to return the relic and dueled the Arishok to the death to keep from turning her over. He was victorious and the surrounding events were what earned the man the title of "Champion of Kirkwall". Involving himself in the affairs of Merrill's Dalish clan, the Champion was present when the Keeper Marethari took on a demon and was forced to slay her. He took responsibility, preventing any further violence with the remaining clan members. With his Apostate-turned-Grey Warden sister Bethany by his side, he took on the Templar Order in Kirkwall, setting precedence for the mage revolutions that shook the rest of Thedas. Though he protected the mages, Hawke was forced to punish Anders for his actions in killing the innocents within the Chantry and put him to death.
No, it is not necessary, but we would prefer that you have played some of at least one game, even if you did not complete it. At the very least we suggest going through the Dragon Age Wiki and acquainting yourself with the lore. The guide to Thedas is also here and is an invaluable asset to even seasoned players of the game.
Anything to be found in the games, primarily, and then canon is extended to works written by David Gaider so long as it does not contradict in-game canon. This includes the books he has published and any statements he has given on the Bioware Forums.
We prefer that any canon connections are either minor connections to major characters or just connections to minor characters. We request that players run any canon character connections by us before finishing the application. Characters like the son, daughter, or spouse of major canon characters will not be allowed, as they are usually sues.
Yes, that is between you and the other player to work out. However, having a character connection with someone who is already a player does not guarantee applicants entry into the game.
Most characters will be sent away somewhere, unless you give us permission to kill them when you leave. This is so the characters can be picked up again at a later date if the player returns. If the player is kicked for drama or other inappropriate behavior, the mods reserve the right to deal with the character as we see fit.
These are different kinds of scenes in The Dragon Age. In addition to Thread, Backscene, Narrative and Plot, some posts may be referred to as Scenes and Logs.
Scene
A scene is any type of post on the In Character Community. It is the broadest term. More specifically, scenes can be threads, backscenes, narratives, plot or logs.
Log
A log is a scene that has been written over Google Documents or email.
Thread
A thread is any scene posted and built upon directly in the In Character Community. At The Dragon Age, threads have an additional meaning: they are side threads that are current date or near current date. The Mods will create Plot Threads to move along the main story, while players create side threads for individual character development. All current date threads are marked ( thread ) in the tags.
Plot
As mentioned, plot are those which are created by the mods. They are the 'main story', as it were, and thus extremely important. Many are those which players get directly involved, these are what count for activity, these are Plot Threads. Some, however, are Plot Narratives, and cannot be replied to by players. These latter ones serve as 'cut scenes' as in video games to give a view of what it happening in other parts of the world at around the same time. In general, characters are meant to be ignorant of what happens in Plot Narratives until the mods say otherwise. All Plots are marked ( plot ) in the tags.
Narratives
Narratives are posted by one player. It is one scene, either taking place in the past or present, that is written by the player and posted for that character. They can involve NPCs, but not other player characters. These help provide back story and character development. All Narratives are marked ( narrative ) in the tags.
Backscenes
Backscenes take place in the past. A backscene can either be a narrative or a thread. It can take place at any point in the character's lifespan (excepting the future) this allows for scenes that are pivotal to the character or for a character's relationship with another character. All Backscenes are marked ( backscene ) in the tags.
Thus, there is overlap between each term, backscenes can be threads (a scene with two or more characters) or narratives. Current date threads can be threads (a scene with two or more characters) or narratives. Narratives can be backscenes, but not threads (a scene with two or more characters), however they can be current dated threads. All of these are scenes. Some of them are logs, while others are posted directly to the In Character Community.
Because of the power and authority that Seekers have, they will not be allowed as player characters. The same holds true for any position of similar power such as the Divine, Royalty, and First Enchanters.
Dagna, the Dwarf that went to study at the Tower, discovered a method of forcing magic to appear in Dwarves. Dagna was named a paragon for her accomplishment, but one of the new mages became an abomination and the other mages were cast from Orzammar. The Chantry has not taken the news that Mages can be created lightly, leading to further tensions between the Dwarves and the rest of Thedas. Dwarf mages are rare, so anyone applying for one needs to clear it with the mods first. Right now we are putting a limit on two (2) dwarf mages in game.
That's not really a question...but yes, Bioware redesigned the races in order to create more differences. While we are keeping the new Qunari and Dwarf looks, the look for Elves would make finding PBs difficult. Therefore, we are keeping the height and facial structure from DA1. We like the pointier ears though!
Horses are rare in Fereldan, so not many characters would have one. Mabari only bond with certain people, so will be restricted to a few characters. Griffons are extinct, and will remain that way.
DA2 does away with skills. Instead, characters will have skills that come out of their backgrounds and history. This allows for a greater variety of skill sets than those in DA1. Use your imagination and write it into the history.
Not possible, sorry. There has only been one documented case of a possible instance where a Warden was cured, but because of the variables involved it is impossible to determine which led to the alleviation of her taint. However, it seems unlikely that pregnancy alone was the only fix, for that would be tantamount to saying that no Grey Warden in the history of Grey Wardens has ever become pregnant. Instead, it was likely a convergence of all possible factors, from her magically accelerated Calling to her pregnancy. Because of the complicated series of events, it will not be duplicated over the course of the game.
First, we do not do this to mess around with you or turn you off the game. This game has a group of extremely talented writers and a character list that is full of the dramatic, the everyday, the sad, the heroic and the ridiculous. We are of the opinion that an RP character does not have to have fewer layers than a real person, nor do they have to be more heroic and impressive.
We are looking for characters that feel like real people and will fit into the game. That means that in order to help you achieve that – and we promise, a character that does not fit in is not fun to play either – we will ask for revisions. We will point out niggling little flaws and things illogical. But we do none of this to hurt you, belittle you or make fun of your writing. We are simply trying to help ensure that your roleplaying experience is as enjoyable for you and the rest of the group, and that your character is the best it can get from the get-go.
